A pair of tourists walk past t-shirts on display in the window of the Estes Park Sweatshirt Center shop on West Elkhorn Avenue, the main street through Estes Park, one afternoon as they eat ice cream. Estes Park is the gateway town to Rocky Mountain National Park and has been criticized as a somewhat carnival-like atmosphere filled with fudge shops and t-shirt emporiums. Rocky Mountain National Park, established in 1915, on the other hand is a showcase of the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains and features peaks ranging from 8,000 to 14,259 feet tall and is home to elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, black bears, coyotes and a wide range of birds, fish and smaller animals.
