Eyes of the Hurricane portraits. September 14, 2005. Newlyweds Lionell and Betty Daggs (cq), from New Orleans, photographed in their Marriott TownPlace Suites in South East Denver on Sept 14, 2005. They were married on July 20, 2005 in Las Vegas. She has two grown sons, he has three. He's a retired U.S. Postal worker, working in quality control in New Orleans. She was working in Human Resources in New Orleans Sewerage (cq, she spelled it and new that it was a different spelling, Sewerage) and Water Board, and hoped to retire at the end of the year. They survived the hurricane in their house, which is about 4 blocks from Lake Pontchartrain and when the water started rising, they went to their attic, where they stayed for 2 days, "we had about 8 inches between us and death." Lionell said. They found their way to Denver with the help of Rocky Mountain Relief. He's a Vietnam veteran, a machine gunner in the Tet Offensive. He volunteered at the Veteran's Administration hospital in New Orleans, and met Betty about 3 years ago because her brother was a patient there, "I thought that if she showed the same love and attention for him, I thought that she might do the same for me," he said. They are waiting for their apartment to be ready in Denver, near the VA hospital, so they can both volunteer there. (ELLEN JASKOL/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS) ***Lionell (cq) and Betty Daggs (cq)
