Ben Kelley (cq), the assistant curator of ice for the National Ice Core Laboratory in the Denver Federal Center, pulls out a tube of ice from the archive, which is kept at 40 below zero. This is for the next installment of Jim Erickson's "A Change in the Air" climate series. Workers and students at the National Ice Core Laboratory use a table saw to slice up chunks of ice cores from the South Pole. The ice cores contain air bubbles that contain a record of past climates. They've been used to reconstruct ancient climates and CO2 levels, among other things. (JUDY WALGREN/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS) Ben Kelley (cq)
