Esther Smith, program director at Tooley Hall in Denver, a 60-bed community corrections center for women--or a halfway house, walks through a 4-person room on August 18, 2005, similar to one that Lisl Auman will probably stay in. In this 60-bed facility, women are helped in the transition from their time in prison to a functional life in the community. She was originally sentenced to life in prison without a chance of parole for her involvement in a burglary in 1997 that led to the death of a policeman. The sentence was overturned in March, 2005 due to an error in the jury instructions. (ELLEN JASKOL/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS) ***
