Montrose, a small Western-slope town in Southwestern Colorado, could easily be stereotyped as a conservative and close-minded place to live but locals paint a different picture saying that even though many in town may have conservative leanings the town overall is very accpeting of everyone. Some local gay people in town claim that there are only a handful of openly gay people in town and a large number of others that feel the need to keep it to themselves. The religious references are omnipresent in the town with a number of billboards and churches in Montrose and the surrounding area. The billboard was in a trailer park just outside of Montrose. Twenty-four-year-old Todd Fiske and 21-year-old Adam Hernandez, both of Montrose, have been charged in the death of Kevin Hale, a local gay man in small Colorado town. They have been charged with first-degree murder in the death of the 36-year-old Montrose man. His body was found in Buckley Park on July 29, 2005 and family and friends believe Hale was killed because he was gay. (MARC PISCOTTY/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS)
