Sergio Alfaro (cq), 11, left, a 6th grader, and his cousin Yimi Serrano (cq), 11, a 5th grader, both from Lakewood, work together to take out an old label from a donated and used notebook that they got for another cousin on August 10, 2005. They are waiting for Sergio's school supplies at the Jeffco Action Center in Lakewood. The center is an emergency services organization, offering food, clothing, and shelter for those in need. They will be giving away supplies through next week or while supplies last. To prevent long lines, they are giving away the supplies to families based on the first letter of the last name. On this day, August 10, they gave to families with names beginning with W,X,Y,Z,A, or B. Yimi said he will pick up his supplies next Thursday, August 18, when they are giving supplies to last names beginning with S, T, U, and V. On Friday, August 19, they will give supplies to all families with proof of Jefferson County residency. There is no advance registration required. (This INFO on when they give out supplies is from their website, www.jeffcoac.org/eventsSchool.php) At left are other families waiting while volunteers prepare their bags of supplies.
