Mitchell Elementary sixth graders Elide Mendoza (cq, left), 10, holds a toy zebra up for classmates including Breonna Thornton (cq, right), 11, to see as they discuss it in Amy Winter's 6th grade science class at the school Monday. Classes started Monday July 25, 2005 for 17 continuous-year schools in Denver including Mitchell Elementary School. Mitchell was also one of four Denver schools selected for redesign by former DPS Superintendent Jerry Wartgow because of low CSAP scores. At Mitchell, Jennifer Barton was named the new principal, and the school is implementing the PACE program - an acronym for Parents, Accountability, Collaboration, Expectations. The program includes monthly parent contacts; professional growth plans for all staff; and the hiring of a bilingual liaison to facilitate parent committees and offer parent training sessions. Both girls attended the school lat year also and the class is learning about different animals in preparation for the CSAP.
