PFC Joseph Peterson's, Alpha Company, 2-72 Armor, face is framed by his crutches as he waits to line up to receive his Purple Heart from MG Robert W. Mixon, Jr., the Commanding General for Fort Carson and the 7th Infantry Division. Joseph's leg was seriously wounded in a grenade attack and he still carries shrapnel in it. On June 28, 2005, Ft. Carson awarded 22 Purple Hearts to wounded soldiers from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The team itself is still serving in Iraq at this time.
