Moises Carranza-Reyes, 29, from Mexico City, was arrested on March 1, 2005 and put into a filthy, over crowed jail in Fairplay, Colorado, for an immigration violation. Less then a week later, he was gravely ill with untreated strep throat that lead to infection all over his body. His leg had to be amputated, he went into both cardiac and pulmonary arrest, he had to have a tracheotomy for him to breathe, and almost lost his other leg. He said that the dedication and good care of his nurses and doctors at Denver Health saved his limb. He is still suffering lung trouble and is very traumatized over the events. Even through this ordeal, Moises says that he loves the United States, that he is ready to work and be productive once again to society, and that he can endure this hardship. He was photographed June 24, 2005 in the law offices of his lawyer Joseph Archuleta in Denver. (JUDY WALGREN/THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS) Moises Carranza-Reyes (RMN)
