SPC Johnny Escoto uses his son Emilio Escoto's, 8, head as an arm rest for his sore hand while his other son, Johnny Escoto, 10, stands to the left. Johnny, from the Bravo Battery, 5-5 Air Defense Artillery, received a Purple Heart from Ft. Carson Commanding General Robert W. Mixon, Jr. for having his thumb blown off in an ambush on an operations post. His thumb was reattached, but he will still have to undergo bone grafts. Emilio said he thought his father's new medal was "cool" because of the gold in it to which his father exclaimed, "Maybe we can melt it down and pay the rent!" Johnny said that after eleven years in the Army he was through. On June 28, 2005, Ft. Carson awarded 22 Purple Hearts to wounded soldiers from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The team itself is still serving in Iraq at this time.
