(LITTLETON, CO., JUNE 1, 2004) Spencer Townshend (cq Townshend), 6, of Centennial, who is autistic refused to work with Lynn Taylor, Occupational Therapist, during a visit at Childrens Hospital South Specialty Care Center Monday in Littleton, Co.. Townshen, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3, has worked with Taylor for two years. Govenor Bill Owens signed Senate Bill 177 for early autism treatment Tuesday June 1, 2004. The $2 million bill establishes the home and community based services for children with autism, which is a developmental disorder that interferes with the ability to communicate with and relate with others. Some 700 children are expected to be born with autism this year. Townshend, now speaks a bit, is begining to eat with a fork, identifys images, and allows touch.
