Lyn Kulenburg (cq), left, a victim of a robbery, consoles Miranda Macias (cq), center, outside the Arapahoe County District Attorney's office on October 28, 2005, after she and her sister, Monica Macias (cq), rt, spoke about their father who was murdered in 2001. Lyn's robbery case and the murder case are two of eight criminal cases that could be thrown out because there is no court transcript for appeals after a court reporter, Valerie Barnes, failed to complete them. In all the cases, the defendants were convicted of serious crimes, including attempted murder and sexual assault on a child. The defendant's lawyers have filed appeals, but the appeals can't go forward without complete transcripts of the trials, and the cases will either have to be retried, or the defendants now serving could be released.
