John L. Hall (cq), co-winner of the 2005 Nobel Prize in physics, accepts the applause during a press conference at the University of Colorado campus on Tuesday October 4, 2005. Hall is a senior research associate and fellow of JILA, a joint institute of CU-Boulder and the National Institute for Standards and Technology. Hall was awarded the Nobel Prize today along with American Roy J. Glauber of Harvard University and Theodor HŠnsch of Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, Germany. Hall and HŠnsch were cited by the Nobel committee "for their contributions to the development of laser-based precision spectroscopy," while Glauber was cited for "his contribution to the quantum theory of optical coherence."
