Washington May 16, 2005 - Stephen Bliley, right, who just received his master's in Environmental Science from the University of Colorado - Denver, explains the use and technology of the "Vertical Axis Wind Turbine" on the National Mall in Washington, DC on May 16, 2005. More than 400 college students from across the country gathered on the Mall to exhibit their innovative solutions for an environmentally sustainable future to compete for the EPA award, "People, Prosperity and the Planet." Bliley is part of a student group from UC Denver called "PLaCES", Participating Learning and Creativity Education for Sustainability, who are researching, testing, and building turbines for a region of India called Narmada River Valley, for each household to have their own power source. A group of students traveled to Mozda, India on April 22, 2005 to install the first village horizontal axis wind turbine and generator, and are currently testing the vertical turbines in hope to install them in India in the future.
