(Washington D.C. - SHOT 5/27/2004) World War II Army veteran and POW Elmer 'Doc' Shipman (center), 81, of Aurora shakes hands with another veteran while getting a preview of the National World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. Thursday. Shipman served in the European Theater and was captured by the Germans in Belgium and served six months as a POW. A group of about 100 Colorado veterans that served in World War II have traveled to Washington D.C. for Saturday's dedication ceremony of the National World War II Memorial. The memorial, nearly 60 years in the making, is located between the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial and honors the 16 million who served and 400,000 who gave their lives in the war.
