StorageTek control systems engineer James Ries (cq) of Boulder works on his laptop in the Tape Library Engineering Lab at the Louisville company Thursday. He was writing computer code to control the position of robots in the SL8500 Tape Library storage system. Ries has worked for StorageTek for 12 years. Sun Microsystems has agreed to purchase Colorado-based Storage Technology Corporation in a $4.1 billion deal. Louisville-based StorageTek makes tape drives and network management and backup software for businesses and government agencies. The combination creates a network computing and data management firm which collectively had total annual revenue of more than $13 billion over the past four quarters.
