The site of Fort Clark, along the banks of the Missouri River near Washburn, North Dakota, was the epicenter of a smallpox outbreak in 1837 which decimated the Mandan Indians. A riverboat carried the disease upriver from St. Louis. (TODD HEISLER/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS)
