(4/16/2005, DENVER, CO.) Nakeyia (CQ), 17, went to George Washington High School for her freshman and part of her sophomore years and then went to Montbello for part of her sophomore and junior year, until she got pregnant and dropped out to have her baby, who is now 10 months old. She finished her studies and got her GED through Urban Peak/The Spot. For the 6th year, The Spot, Urban Peak Denver, The Community College of Denver, the GED Institute and The Adams Mark Hotel celebrate the educational accomplishments of homeless and urban youth who have earned their GED. This year, over 60 youth will walk away in cap and gown with their diploma in hand. In Denver, 24% of young people fail to earn a high school diploma. Urban Peak Denver and The Spot, offer young people the opportunity to learn and excel at their own pace. Youth will participate in a traditional graduation ceremony complete with caps, gowns and graduation rings. (Photo by Judy Walgren/ ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS)
