L-R Jesse Hale(cq) and Paul Urista (cq) both facilities operators for Shell, take gauge measurements behind a test heater well Thursday April7, 2005. It is one of 56 at the Shell Mahogany Research project in Rio Blanco County in western Colorado near Rifle, Co. where research is being done that may resurrect the shale oil industry. Shell is developing a new technology that involves putting giant electric heaters into 2,000 foot holes, and slowly heating them for two years. The process releases the oil and gas in the shale making it easy to pumpand eliminates the need to mine and promises to have a low impact on the environment. (DENNIS SCHROEDER / ROCKY NEWS)
