Rapids Managing Director Jeff Plush presents a plaque to Iraq War Veterans Sergeant Gary Boggs (cq), 32 of Marion, Ohio, and Corporal Donny Daughenbaugh (cq), 25, of Des Moines, Iowa, are honored in a pre-game ceremony at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo., on Wednesday, July 4, 2007. Ohio National Guardsman Sergeant Gary Boggs was riding in a humvee in September of 2003 near Tirkit in Iraq while assigned to the Army's 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division when an improvised explosive device pelted Boggs with shrapnel on the left side of his body. He lost his left eye and his left arm was badly injured, both his ear drums were also ruptured. With the help of an ocularist, Boggs was given a prosthetic left eye, that, sparing a few scars, has got him looking like his old self again. U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Donny Daughenbaugh of the 2nd Battalion, 24th Marines based in Mahmoudiya, south of Baghdad, Iraq, was on foot patrol in October of 2004 when a car drove by and fired at him with an AK-47. Daughenbaugh was hit in the face. The bullet entered through his left cheekbone and lodged between his skull and top vertebra, fracturing his jawbone and missing nerves and the brain by millimeters. The bullet, too close to the brain stem to move, was left where it was. A union carpenter from Des Moines, Iowa, Daughenbaugh lives in Des Moines, Iowa with his wife Sarah and his four-year-old-daughter, Gabby. (JONATHAN D.
