DLM1020 Ryan Koester, 25, leaps over an irrigation ditch that supplies water to a field of alfalfa near Sterling, Colo. Tuesday, July 2, 2007. Koester farms in the North Sterling Irrigation District which depends on water that flows from North Sterling Reservoir, which with a storage capacity of 74,590 acre feet of water is the largest reservoir on the northeastern plains of Colorado. The reservoir fills with surface water from the South Platte River so the district is one of many senior surface water right interests that has fought to keep the well users shut down since 2002.
