Greg Mortenson, executive director of nonprofit Central Asia Institute, with schoolchildren of Sarhad village, Wakhan corridor, NE Afghanistan, where the female literacy rate is less than 10%. Since a 1993 climb of Pakistan's K2, Mortenson has dedicated his life to set up schools and education, especially for girls, in remote mountain regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. To date, he has established 55 schools, educating over 24,000 students.
