Fay and "Shepp" Sheppard opened Shepp's Motel and Restaurant in tiny Kit Carson more than 40 years ago, after the couple, originally from Oklahoma, moved from California in search of a place to open a business. "My dad wanted to get back over the Rockies, and this was the location they came up with," their daughter, Margaret, says. Today, 69-year-old Margaret and 87-year-old Fay are the only employees of the 10-room motel and diner, where you can get the Chuckwagon BBQ Special for less than $5. The ladies renamed the place The Good Sheppard Motel and Restaurant after Fay's husband died in 1984. It's the longest-running, same-owner business in the area, they say. Now the family is looking to sell, so Fay - who will be 88 in April - can stop working 14-hour days. There's no telling how busy they'll be from day to day, since all the business comes from travelers. "No one intends to stay here," Margaret says. "It just depends who drives by."
