George R. (Dick) Allen of Broomfield, Colorado and Pharr, Texas died peacefully in the arms of his wife on December 17th at the home of his son and daughter-in-law in Elizabeth, Colorado. Dick was born June 20th, 1931 in Douglas, Nebraska to R.A. (Todd) and Pearl M. (Watson) Allen. He went to school in Douglas and then worked in Lincoln, Nebraska at the Lincoln Journal Star from 1948 to 1951. He joined the Marines and served from 1951 to 1954. He continued working at the Journal until August of 1958 and then opened Allen's Grocery Store in Avoca, Nebraska. He sold the store in 1972 and worked for the Journal Star again until he moved his family to Broomfield, Colorado in 1973 and worked for the Rocky Mountain News from 1973 until 1993 when he retired as the superintendant of the press room. Dick married Marlys J. (Marti) Wicken on July 18th, 1954 and they have four children; Marla (Mark) Potadle of Chicago Ill, Barbara (Daniel) Slattery of Broomfield, Colorado; Michael (Laurel) Allen of Elizabeth, Colorado, and Michelle (Christopher) Acker of Monument, Colorado. He has five grandchildren; Lauren and Quinn Slattery, and Molly, Riley, and Libby Acker. He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings; Jack, Robert and William Allen and Mary Franz. Dick will be remembered by all as a loving husband, father, "Papa" and friend. "A Celebration of Dick's Life" will be held on Saturday, December 29th, at 3:00 p.m. at Broomfield United Methodist Church at 545 West 10th avenue, in Broomfield, Colorado. Dick has donated his body for cancer research to The Anatomical Board of the State of Colorado
