(DENVER, Co. - SHOT 3/17/2005) Friends and drinking buddies Greg Johnson (left), 46, and Paul Arthur Rees, 33, laugh as they watch airplanes pass overhead while the sun sets in Civic Center Park one evening. The two had been drinking vodka and beer on a bench in the park passing away the time between 5:00am (when they have to leave most overnight sheters) and 9:00pm (when most shelters open their doors for the evening again). Denver is working on a plan to turn Civic Center Park into a destination point in downtown Denver by possibly connecting it to the 16th Street Mall and perhaps even burying part of Colfax Avenue to make the whole area more pedestrian friendly. The ambitious plan calls for reviving the area around the park that has largely become a haven for drug dealers and users and the homeless. The city hopes to make the park an entertainment center with food stands, concerts, film series and other attractions. (Photo by MARC PISCOTTY/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS)
