(LITTLETON, Colo., June 8, 2004) Excel Energy utility worker Mathew Abeyta (left) and apprentice Eric Anaya, both of Denver, remove an old transformer while upgrading transformers in a Littleton neighborhood Tuesday. Excel is spending $25 million upgrading transformers throughout the metro area after last summer's power outages. This particular transformer had already failed last night, causing an outage. They said many builders installed transformers that can't handle the higher electrical needs of today appliances causing the units to burn out. Transformers step down power for household usage and generally tend to supply power to 8-10 houses. (Photo by: MARC PISCOTTY/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS)
