(1/20/05, Nagappatinam, India) Today we went to Nagappatinam and Velankanni to see the areas that were the most damaged in the Tsunami. Barber Ramesh cuts fisherman and laborer Rajendren's hair as they talked about the tsunami and the relief efforts - which they were both unimpressed with. Rajendren supports a family of six - himself, his wife and four children on 150 to 300 rupees a day. (the rupee is roughly 45 to the dollar...) He said that life is so bad now - his house was totally destroyed and the family is staying in a park for the time being until the government relocates them to a new place. He said he would rather sell tea then to go back and work in the ocean. (Judy Walgren, Rocky Mountain News)
