(5/5/05, Denver, CO) For the past six years, Dan Medina has been the community liason for Lincoln High School. He is from the neighborhood around the school, has had two children graduate from there, two in school there right now, and two on their way. When her first arrived, gangs controlled the hallways and dealers sold drugs openly inside the building. They have turned the school around 180 degrees. Student Isela came into Dan's office with her sister Elizabeth, to get help figuring out how to get herself out of a terrible mess with her grades. She was on contract with Dan last year, did well, and so this year she opted out of being on contract again. She started running around with kids who were ditching and found herself with an F grade point average. Dan helps her decide to go to Emily Griffith summer school to make up for this semester's failures, and then he will let her come back in the fall on contract from day one. She agrees and signs the contract for next fall. He also told her to go to her teachers in the classes that she needs to graduate and ask for make-up work, which she did. The teachers agreed and that will help her get closer to getting her diploma. (PHOTO BY JUDY WALGREN, ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS) Isela (cq) Dan Medina (cq) Elizabeth (cq)
