FlatIron Crossing Shopping Center, Broomfield, Colo., held its first annual Teacher Olympics Event to honor National Teacher Day. Eight teachers were selected for a head to head competition in four categories, speed grading, chalkboard writing, spelling bee and school item storage. Each was timed and checked for accuracy and the overall winner got a gold apple and a $500 gift certificate intended for purchases of student supplies they usually must pay for out of their own pocket. They said today the average amount a teacher spends over a year in her class for items otherwise gone lacking is about $500 which is how they came up with the figure for the first place award.
