(CLEAR CREEK COUNTY shot on 4/26/05) Alex Garcia, 25 year veteran, is a production operator aboard this scoop loader dumping 10 tons a bucket of ore down an ore pass which feeds to the haul truck below at the end of a 600 ft. drop. He says he makes about 300 runs a day. This is the Production area and we are at 7,700 ft. more than2,500 ft. below the surface. Henderson Mine is 10 miles west of Empire, CO at the base of Berthoud Pass. The company has been mining Molybdenum, the byproduct of Molybdenite which is the ore carrying rock mined underground, for many years. Now, the company has added a third labor shift during 2004 making it a continuously operated mine. They produced 28 million pounds of molybdenum last year, up from 22 million pounds in 2003. A ton of ore produces 4 pounds of end product. (All information provided in person at the mine by J. Stuart Teuscher, Operations Manager, 303-569-3221-ext. 1273/email steusche@phelpsdodge.com) (Photo by STEVEN R. NICKERSON / ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS)
