(4/5/05, Denver, CO) Ninth grader Larry Uvias, pats Dan on the back as he comes into school. Dan and other teachers and security guards monitor the hallways before school, making sure that students get to class on time and with some sense of order. For the past six years, Dan Medina has been the community liason for Lincoln High School. He is from the neighborhood around the school, has had two children graduate from there, two in school there right now, and two on their way. When he first arrived, gangs controlled the hallways and dealers sold drugs openly inside the building. They have turned the school around 180 degrees. (PHOTO BY JUDY WALGREN, ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS)
