(10/22/04, Denver, CO) On a cold day, steamy smoke billows up from the Cherokee Power Plant north of downtown Denver. The steam is mixed with pollutants coming out of the towering stacks. Coal-burning power plants are among the highest emitters of Co2 in the United States, along with large feed lots, and burning fossil fuel, which is a main contributer to global warming. Although Cherokee has added scrubbers to the stacks and has taken other measures to clean up the emmissions, Steve Eandi of the Rocky Mountain chapter of the Sierra Club, says they still have a long way to go.
