(163) A contestant of the Polar Challenge, a cross-country ski race to the North Pole, reaches up to his teammates as they try their luck, strength, and smarts during the Colorado try-outs Saturday, October 18, 2008, at the Camp Tahosa, a boy-scout camp near Ward, Colo. The Polar Challenge is a 350 nautical mile team race to the 1996 location of the Magnetic North Pole. The 2009 Polar Challenge will for the first time feature American competitors in commemoration of Americans Matthew Henson and Robert Peary, the first explorers to reach the Geographic North Pole in 1909. The teams of three competitors must find two manned checkpoints to resupply as they navigate the harsh environment of the bear country with extremely low temperatures (as low as -85 degrees Fahrenheit with wind.) The race, which takes place from April to May, also get documented in 2004 by the BBC documentary series "The Challenge." (Photo/Silvia Razgova)) Names:
