11/04/04,Denver, CO) Mauricio Saravia came to this country seven years ago from Uruguay. His intention was to use his artistic ability - he's a musician, poet, painter - to raise enough money for a series of operations. Saravia has the Elephant Man disorder, a disease that make the bone grow at an abnormal rate. He decided to blend his passions by creating an arts magazine. It did well, but then the main financial backer pulled out, leaving Mauricio with no money and debt. Over the last year, he's tried to make a living selling his paintings, which are on display in LA galleries. He's racked up a lot of medical bills and needs to move to LA to be close medical experts who can treat him. Mauricio was embarrassed that his friend Brian Wood called the Denver Nuggets to see if they would send a few cheerleaders to a fund raiser for Mauricio Sunday December 5th at the Mile High Station to read some of his poetry.
