NYT41 - (NYT41) OVER THE ANTARCTIC OCEAN -- Dec. 29, 2004 -- ANTARCTICA-SURVIVE -- The United States Navy patrol plane, code-named George 1 flies over the Antarctic Ocean in October 1946 a month prior to her crash in Antarctica. Of all the places where the Cold War was waged, Antarctica was surely the coldest. On Dec. 30, 1946, a U.S. Navy patrol plane with a crew of nine, mapping the Antarctic coast as part of a military effort called Operation Highjump, crashed in a snowstorm after its radar failed to detecta slope not shown on charts.
