(AURORA, Colo., October 4, 2004) Brittney Johnson, 11, paints her buddy Sarah Coomes, 11, with the name of her boyfriend Jimmy. Sarah had already painted Devon, Brittany's boyfriends name, on her paint cover plastic bag but black paint on a black bag does not show well. The two were suppose to be painting the team name, "PumpkinHeads" on the poster to accompany the rig to the contest but it was a little less interesting than painting on each other. Sean Doherty, local artist from Castle Rock, CO, calls it "Hypothesis in motion" and is instructing students after class at East Middle School, 1275 Fraser St., in creating a catapult to launch pumpkins for distance and maybe, accuracy. 12-24 kids showed up each of three consecutive mondays culminating today with the final painting and construction of the "PumpkinHeads", team name, finished the launch device and demonstration testing. The end result will see the kids competing in the Jack-O-Launch at the PumpkinFest saturday, 9a-4p, 170 S. Chambers St., Delaney Farm. (Photo by STEVEN R NICKERSON / ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS)
