While a 400+ pound bruin rest in the stairwell of the Prospector Condominiums on East Hyman Avenue, DOW district wildlife manager Kelly Wood prepares several shots of tranquilizer as a large crowd gathers to watch Saturday afternoon September 25, 2004. After five shots, three from a rifle and two with a stick, the bruin succumbed to the drug and fell asleep. Eight people, including several by-standers, helped carry the beast from the bottom of a stairwell to the street where Wood and DOW district wildlife manager Darron Chacon, tagged and measured him. At a chest girth of over 54 inches, Wood said the beast was "off the charts." "He's over 400 pounds," she said, "that's the end of the charts." The beast began his trip to Aspen invading the storage unit of the Popcorn Wagon and The Colony eating 10 pounds of cocoa mix. OVer 100 peoiple witnessed the event. Aspen Times photo/Paul Conrad.
