Jariatu Sankoh Yillah (cq), 37, a refugee from Sierra Leone talks to a reporter about her experiences in her native country in Africa. She was raped during a raid by armed militias and her family dispersed to preserve their lives. She has not seen her family in years (since the incident) and has been living in Colorado for over 4 years. Local asylum seekers gathered for a unique Thanksgiving ceremony with Rocky Mountain Survivors Center (RMSC) employees in Englewood. RMSC is a nonprofit organization that assists survivors of torture and war trauma, and their families, to heal and rebuild their lives. The center offers asylum legal representation, healthcare and psychosocial services, is actively pursuing building the capacity of other providers to respond to the needs of torture survivors, and is building a community development component to the work.
