Four and a half month old Sage Koppana (cq) gets raised up to the sky by her mother, Claire Vaughn (cq), as a symbol of a new beginning as part of a Medicine Wheel ritual. In a unique style, suited to their spiritual ways, Native Americans, Buddhists, and other denominations built a traditional medicine wheel on private land as close as they could get to the drill sites (ironically, citizens are not allowed on the refuge, however multinational energy companies can build roads and threaten the auquifer by drilling). One hundred and one people participated in a traditional Native American Medicine Wheel ceremony, held at noon on the soltice (June 21) near Crestone. Another is scheduled to be celebrated on August 26. (JAVIER MANZANO/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS) Sage Koppana (cq), Claire Vaughn (cq).
