(at left) Major Olmsted speaks to village leaders as a Staff Sergeant (who wished to remain anonymous) stands outside of the Police Office as he monitors the Major's demeanor, conduct and response to the role-player's questions and concerns. The mission on this day, was for Major Olmsted and his team to secure a cordon around the village, talk to the village leaders in order to obtain their permission to search for a possible suspect, and to monitor Iraqi soldiers as they detain a possible Al-Qaida suspect on this particular town. Within these exercises, Major Olmsted had to make sure that he followed proper socio-cultural codes of conduct, such as removing his sunglasses and gloves, before shaking hands and addressing village leaders, in order to minimize the negative impact of the U.S. presence in theater. His mission in Iraq will be in part to help train and develop Iraqi soldiers and police, in order for the country to be able to sustain peace by itself. He is scheduled to deploy along with his unit, within the next few weeks. (JAVIER MANZANO/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS) Andrew Olmsted (cq).
