Repairs began Monday, nearly four months after the statue was damaged when it was struck by lightning back in May. Lawrence Holland, a superintendent with Premier Specialty Contractors Inc. who is overseeing the project said that they will begin by stripping the layers of paint that have covered the statue over the years so that they can see the extent of the cracking and other damage caused by the lightning. He said that weather permitting that he hopes the repairs will be finished in about three months. The statue was shipped in sections to Colorado from Italy in 1954.
