86 year-old Ricardo Lopez (cq) points his wife to the title of his text book at their citizenship class at the Woodbury Public Library in Denver on August 31, 2007. Mr. Lopez fought in World War II, and worked for the City of Denver for all of his civilian life. He now decided to complete the process to earn his citizenship. Citizenship classes are filling up - fueled by anxieties and uncertainties over the immigration debate. This has prompted a record surge in citizenship applicaitons in Colorado. The Latina Initiative is among several local groups working to get legal residents signed up for ciitizenship classes and helping them get their paperwork in order to become U.S. citizens and eventually voters.
