Ginger Thayer (cq), mother of Arlene Gavrilis' fiance Adam Hawkes, hands out information about Arlene and the importance of driving sober at a sobriety checkpoint in Aurora Friday night, Aug. 24, 2007. For over two hours Friday night, Thayer and Arlene's mother, Gerda Gavrilis (cq), alternated handing out the materials to drivers. The driver, not id'd, paused and turned towards Thayer saying, "I remember that." The Aurora Police Department conducted a sobriety checkpoint from 9pm Friday to 3am Saturday just west of S. Buckley Rd. on eastbound Iliff Ave. The night's operation was dedicated in memory of Arlene Gavrilis who was killed in the early morning hours June 4, 2005, a day that was to have been Gavrilis' wedding day. Her car was struck by another vehicle driven by an impaired driver traveling in excess of 100 mph. (MARK T.
