University of Colorado hydrologist Nel Cain travels across the ice of Green Lake 4 on his way to a sampling site. Cain will drill through the ice with a hand augur to reach lake water. He will take the half a pint of water as a sample for a long-term-chemistry study. Cain has made the trip to Green Lake 4 every month for the past 23 years to sample the water. The sampling has also recored the thinning of the lake ice that reveals something about climate change in the high country of Colorado.
