Students enter Smiley Middle School, in Park Hill, early in the morning. Smiley is a school that consistently gets low CSAP scores and is said to have declining scores, as well. For this reason, and others, the school is losing students regularly every year and statics show it has the lowest occupancy rate of all the schools in DPS. The principal Nate Howard, says that the gentrification of the neighborhood is also playing a role in the declining enrollment because the new families do not have children in middle school. They are a tri-academy school during 2006-2007 and because the enrollment is down again this year, next year they will have to switch to a bi-academy structure. (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS/JUDY DEHAAS) **
