Oxygen is injected into raw sewage to feed the millions of bacteria that will help to break down the organic waste, a process that takes place in the Primary Treatment Sludge Tanks at Metro's, wastewater utility. Wastewater utilities around Colorado are preparing to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to comply with new rules to limit ammonia discharges into rivers and streams.
