NYT35 - (NYT35) RANDALLS ISLAND, N.Y. -- August 1, 2004 -- CURE-MUSIC-REVIEW -- Robert Smith of the Cure during the Curiosa Festival at Randalls Island on Saturday, July 31, 2004. As early as its 1979 single, "Boys Don't Cry,'' the Cure was not only insisting that a man could be vulnerable and emotional, but giving those feelings a new kind of voice: Smith's quivering, almost androgynous yelp, desperately blurting out its need. Two decades later, the Cure would turn out to be a cornerstone of emo, the collegiate rock in which hypersensitive guys tell all. (Rahav Segev/The New York Times)
