(DLM8183) - Bridgette Jackson pets Zeus, a dog that was pulled from the smoldering remains of the Castle West apartment building after a blaze tore through it early Tuesday morning in Colorado Springs, Colo., Jan. 16, 2007. Zeus wasn't found until late in the afternoon and Jackson, the building's manager, was watching after him until his owner came back. According to Colorado Springs Fire department spokeswoman Julie Stone the first call for the fire came in at 12:47 a.m. and the first crew was on scene three minutes later. They immediately called for back-up. When the arrived she said firefighters saw residents hanging from balconies and windows trying to escape the blaze. Firefighters rescued 62 people. Stone said 14 people were transported to area hospitals with minor to moderate injuries and that one firefighter was injured when he slipped on the ice. A Red Cross emergency assistance center has been set up at the Springs of Life Church next door to the apartment building and 35 residents of the destroyed building were being helped there. The fire is still under investigation and crews will be out there the rest of the day working to put out hot spots still burning in the building.
