(DLM7839) - Rudell Davis is overcome with sadness and frustration as she talks on the phone in the basement of the Springs of Life Church after her apartment in the Castle West building next door was destroyed in a fire that engulfed the whole complex in Colorado Springs, Colo., Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007. She fled the fire with her husband, Daryl, daughter Jasmine and their 5-year-old grandson Cornel, who still had no shoes shoes because he had to leave without them. According to Colorado Springs Fire department spokeswoman Julie Stone the first call for the fire came in at 12:47 a.m. and the first crew was on scene three minutes later. They immediately called for back-up. When they arrived she said firefighters saw residents hanging from balconies and windows trying to escape the blaze. Firefighters rescued 62 people. Stone said 14 people were transported to area hospitals with minor to moderate injuries and that one firefighter was injured when he slipped on the ice. A Red Cross emergency assistance center has been set up at the Springs of Life Church next door to the apartment building and as of 10:00 a.m. Tuesday morning 35 residents of the destroyed building had sought help there. The fire is still under investigation and crews will be out there the rest of the day working to put out hot spots still burning in the building.
