Mandy Hollingsworth, (cq), seems enraptured in a hug with Umande, on exhibit tonight during the farewell. Many, many came to say "bye-bye" as many kids, prompted and impromptu, were saying all night long. Umande, a male baby western lowland gorilla was born in captivity February 18, 2006 to a captivity raised mother who did not know how to raise her baby at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, 4250 Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Road, Colorado Springs, Colo., (today being Monday October 2, 2006) The plan for several months was decided for 24 hour care from trained keepers in the primate exhibit with intention of reintroducing him to this mom and dad and the already established troupe sometime in August, 2006. Each try was not a success. The bonding process did not take and Umande was left back with the keepers again. A couple weeks ago the head primate keeper decided it was not going to work here. This is the first baby gorilla born in captivity at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in ten years. The final decision was made and Umande will have a farewell party tonight from 530pm-730pm. He will go to the Columbus, Ohio zoo where success in breeding and raising in captivity has been accomplished often. All transport requirements remain a secret as safety has been stated as a preeminent concern from sean anglum, p.r. zoo. He will be departing in the next few days. The party will involve invited guests and media and the children will have a last chance to say goodbye. Some interesting drawings have been done by the kids and put up on the walls and a children's choir is suppose to be singing a farewell song and a giant cake is coming in for the festivities as well. Emotions are mixed at best. The primary keepers are all sad for the departured but happy for the chance for Umande to have what he needs to grow up well. There will be two keepers accompanying Umande on his first airplane flight and one will return while the other will stay at the zoo for a week to help facilitate adjustments. For now i
